Kind Words from our Basin Community

I am a retired teacher and have seen first hand the lack of knowledge in many children as to where exactly their food comes from and how it is produced. I do not think that I can overstate the huge impact that the Elk Root learning opportunity will have for students to better understand their world.

Axel Krause, President West Kootenay Beekeepers, Apiary Inspector

We loved visiting Elk Root!  It was educational and inspiring for the kids and parents alike.  Elk Root has done such an amazing job creating a safe and interactive experience that teaches respect and care for the flora and fauna that abound.  Our daughter is now keenly aware of the unique and important role that bees play in the world and how important it is to treat them well, as well as much more interested in helping with our own garden at home.  And the herd of elk that passed through for a visit was truly awe inspiring.  What a gem of a place and resource for our community!

In my opinion, the huge impact that Elk Root Conservation’s Educational Demonstration Gardens are going to have on conservation and specifically on pollinator conservation and education is in two major ways. Firstly, the students will see fruits and vegetables actually being sustainably grown on a farm, and experience how they are being planted and harvested. And secondly, they will be able to see the vitally important role that honey bees play in the production of these fruits and vegetables, simultaneously learning about the process of pollination and the bees’ role in it.

Our family got to experience the pollinator gardens at Elk Root Conservation last summer. Elk Root has the most incredible gardens, carefully grown to accommodate their most important residents: bees.  We learned so much about the range of flowers and plants that attract and feed these hard working insects, and the importance of conservation for all the local creatures.  The kids begged to stay longer.  We are lucky to have such a wonderful outdoor classroom so close to home, and we look forward to going back.
