June has been a buzZzy month for Elk Root Conservation! Read on to hear about what we’ve been up to this June… and for an exciting announcement!!

The Bee Safari Buzz

Elk Root Conservation’s gardens have been buzzing with bees… but also with buzzy little explorers!

The Bee Safari program launched last year has become a huge success! In the last few weeks, youth groups such as Heartwood Nature School and Nelson Naturekids have joined the Elk Root Crew to learn about the importance of pollinators in getting dinner on our tables. Laena Brown, co-safari leader, describes the program as “the ultimate bee-themed summer day camp! There’s fun physical activities, games, crafts, walking tours, stories, and even a pollination puppet show.” The program is led by Elk Root Conservation Board Chair Kate Mizenka,Volunteer Leader Laena Brown, and our team of amazing youth interns.

“We could really feel the passion and enthusiasm for their work coming through from the educators. We hope our group will be able to visit again!” – Jenni Stol, Volunteer Leader of Nelson Naturekids

“Kids learn so much through play,” said Laena Brown. “They’re having all this fun, and soaking in all of this awesome education at the same time.”

None of this would have been possible without Kootenay Co-op and West Kootenay Beekeepers! Their recent donations have allowed us to purchase additional bee suits and crafting materials so that our kiddos could bee-friend our BuzZzy friends up close! Thanks to them, we have been able to ensure a fantastic experience for our little explorers.

“It was cool to see the bees and what their hives looked like! Bees are so important because they are one of the best pollinators” – Anna, aged 10, Nelson Naturekids

Looking for a Helping Hand

Elk Root Conservation has a new project on the go and we are looking for a handy volunteer who has the skills to help us build a farm stand! This exciting new project will allow us to raise funds to put back into our Regenerative Educational Community Food Garden, a new project that will help feed vulnerable members of our community, right here in the Slocan Valley! If you, or someone you know can help, please send us an email at elkrootconservation@gmail.com, or reach out on Instagram or Facebook!
